If you're like me, you'd like to dump TLC yesterday. We've had a wish list of features for a long time and we keep
hearing how things will improve in the next release, but that's been pushed back so long no one remembers when
the original release date was supposed to be.

I mean, we can't even make TLC print larger or bolder receipts! We can't search by call number, we can't click on
items in the Charges tab. And folks using self check are frustrated because TLC puts everything that's on Hold in
Transit, and when something is in Transit, patrons can't check it out.

I don't see how we can move to a self service model using TLC and I'm already advocating for a new ILS.
Everyone groans in meetings when I suggest we consider migrating, but self service is more important than
the headache of leaving TLC behind.

My two cents.

Is anyone here a member of LAMA or more specifically the Systems and Services Section? I am asking because I just joined ALA a month ago after not being a member since library school, and I chose to join LAMA because I am in management, and because I read that SASS is supossed to be the ADS component of the group, but it seems very inactive or at least quiet.

I am toying with a blog post that will be sort of an open letter to Jim Rettig (ALA preseident elect) about how ALA really needs an ADS/Circulation SIG or committee because I feel that our needs are not being met. Before I post something like that I wanted to know if anyone has any info about any of the exisiting ALA avenues that sort of address ADS and circulation.

Do they work? Do they meet our needs? I am inclined to say no since I don't ever hear anyone speaking or writing about them.

Any thoughts?

I have decided to save my money and pass on ALA this year, since I would prefer to go to Brick & Click Libraries this fall. Based on the program, I feel that there is a lot more related to access services at B&C than at ALA. Is anyone else planning on going?

http://brickandclick.org

Thanks, Karen, for creating this topic. So does anyone here have to deal with security as part of their job responsibilties? By security I mean beyond the materials, actual building security, meeting with campus police, following up on incident reports, etc?

I do and I am going a bit crazy!!!!!!!!!!!! I would be interested in knowing how strictly does you building adhere to it's building use policy and in what times of incidents do you see shades of gray rather than black and white?

I have tried, for several years, to start indefinite due dates for Faculty at GT. When we change the due date to indefinite, the fine interval changes to minutes instead of days. Is anyone using indefinite and how did you work around the fine problem? Also, how did you get the expiration dates out of the patron records, or did you ever have them? Thanks,

How many of you use patron photos on your checkout terminals? I have lots of questions about this. Do patrons object to having their picture taken? Is it a requirement in order to get a card? Can only the person who matches the picture use the card? Is there any way a parent, spouse or room mate could pick up materials for a patron? We currently say if they have the card they can pick up materials and check out on it, but if you only check out to the person who matches the photo then what do you do? What have you seen as the benefits of having the photo on the screen and what are the drawbacks. I am not always certain that just because we have the capability to do something, we should do it. let me know your thoughts.

Dianna

I started working in Circulation/Library Services in 1996 as a shelver when I was just 16 years old. After college I worked for two years at a public library in Indiana (where I'm originally from) where I started as a Circulation Assistant, and was promoted to Circulation Supervisor after a year. My husband and I wanted to move so I applied for a Circulation Coordinator position on the east-coast and we've been east-coast transplants here in Massachusetts since 2005 Last fall I started earning my MLS and will graduate in June of 2008.

As a Circulation Coordinator I'm in charge of supervising and training almost 30 student assistants as well as organizing all stack maintenace activities (shelving, range reading, binding, periodical maintenance, etc). While motivation and training seems to be the biggest obstacles where the students are concerned, being just 25 I do have the advantage of increased communication between myself and the students. I really enjoy my job and hope to be a Circulation/Library Services department head/manager.

I am happy to meet you all, and hope this forum gets a lot of use!

Ami

We had the worst patron experience about 2 months ago. A Faculty member was upset that she was unable to renew a book and had to bring it back (the book belonged to another library in our consortium and we didn't make that rule). Anyway, she charged inside, waited for the individual she had spoken to on the phone and screamed "here's your fucking book!!!!!!!!!!!" while she slammed the item on the counter. We have NEVER experienced a patron this extreme, let alone a Faculty member acting like a child. Luckily, the circulation assistant used to work Security and she is as cool as a cucumber. The Head of Circulation, like a lion protecting her cubs, charged out there and resolved the situation. The lady eventually cried and apologized. By the way, she wasn't even overdue or owing any fines. Crazy chick.
Now I know for a fact you Public Library folks can beat my story in a heartbeat.

I am the Circulation Librarian for the Georgia Institute of Technology Library and Information Center. I am also the Assistant Department Head of Circulation. I have worked for GT for, gosh, 7 years now. I started working in libraries at the ripe age of 16 and fell in love, particularly with Circulation. I even worked as a Circulation Manager for several years in a public library. I am very passionate about my profession. I look forward to "meeting" others in my field of work.
