Half way through my 5th year in Access Services at a mid size university. Learning each day. I think that this type of Wiki has great potential.
I'm in a similar situation and it's very often like herding cats! I think this will be a great place to share ideas .
I am looking forward to seeing this potential fulfilled.
Aloha!
I am the Access Services Librarian at Honolulu Community College (HCC). I began working in the library as a Library Assistant III on a short contract in 1987, left to work at the Hawaii Supreme Court Library for a while and returned in 1990. Soon after I decided to enroll in the University of Hawaii School of Library and Information Services and graduated with my MLIS in 1992.
After working in the Hawaii State Public Library system for a couple of months, a position opened at HCC and I applied and got the job!! I have been there every since.
I am currently in Virginia on sabbatical leave and was very fortunate to be able to attend the Computers in Libraries conference in Washington D.C. April 16-18. I will be forwarding the information about this wiki and hope other librarians from Hawaii will join. Often it is nearly impossible to receive funding to attend conferences since the air fare alone is astronomical but having a forum such as this will help us stay current with new and exciting technologies.
I will be attending the ALA conference in Washington D.C. in June and hope to meet some of the other librarians on this forum.
Aloha,
Janet
I am the interlibrary loan coordinator and a member of circulation and access services at a small academic library in Georgia. I look forward to sharing experiences with others on the front line of library services.
Does anyone use a Fine Appeal Committee totally outside of the library? We currently have one that is half and half but are thinking about moving to just outside faculty. I believe this will remove the circulation staff from some of the complaints about fines that have to be paid after an appeal.
We are a branch campus and use a half/half committee but the main campus does use an outside committee only. The Access Services librarian likes this because it stops people from blaming the library or librarians if their appeal is denied. I would like to do this but we are rather small and it is hard to recruit faculty for any more library responsibilities. They are very supportive and I hesitate to overdo the requests. Good luck.
I really like this site — very informative.
I am the chair of the Southeastern Library Association's Circulation and Reserve Roundtable. The Southeastern Library Association meets every other year for a conference in conjunction with one of the library associations from the seven southeastern states. On the year in-between we usually meeting the Atlanta area for association and committee meetings. If you would like to make contact with other librarians and staff who are involved with Access Services you are more than welcome to join us. Please visit the SELA web page and read about this great regional organization that offers ALA type programs and committees without having to travel so far and compete with so many others for committee assignments and presentation possibilities. SELA is a really good organization and I would welcome some new ideas to our Circulation and Reserve Roundtable.
