We had the worst patron experience about 2 months ago. A Faculty member was upset that she was unable to renew a book and had to bring it back (the book belonged to another library in our consortium and we didn't make that rule). Anyway, she charged inside, waited for the individual she had spoken to on the phone and screamed "here's your fucking book!!!!!!!!!!!" while she slammed the item on the counter. We have NEVER experienced a patron this extreme, let alone a Faculty member acting like a child. Luckily, the circulation assistant used to work Security and she is as cool as a cucumber. The Head of Circulation, like a lion protecting her cubs, charged out there and resolved the situation. The lady eventually cried and apologized. By the way, she wasn't even overdue or owing any fines. Crazy chick.
Now I know for a fact you Public Library folks can beat my story in a heartbeat.
This may not beat your experience but it sure was satisfying! We had a patron turn himself over to the police for not returning his library books! The patron came to the library to get a card because he wanted to use the internet. We found a record with his name, date of birth, social security number, address and phone number on it. We told him he already had a card and had three long-overdue books. He said no that was impossible. He had never been to our library before. I told him that it must be a case of identity theft and he should report it to the police. He did. He also gave the police permission to view his library records. They went to his home found the material and arrested him for filing a false claim and stealing library materials. He skipped bail. two years later he was arrested when he was stopped for a traffic violation in Colorado. They brought him back to Salina. He stood trial and was given 18 months. All because he wanted to use the internet!

I have heard this story!! You must have been at the Circ Conference in Wisconsin. I love it!!!
Yes I was at the Circ Conference. Isn't that the best conference! Everyone who is involved in Circulation should attend that conference.
What circ conference are you referring to? I live in Wisconsin and have not heard of this. Thanks!
There is a link under Conferences It is held in Madison. I went last year and really enjoyed it. They plan on doing it again this year. I plan on attending again.
I was at the circ conference in Madison last fall. It is great and I recommend it to everyone who works circ. I loved the story about the constipated woman in the rest room. It was all in the telling…but it also sure showed how things can get real crazy real fast in access services.
Do you have the list of attendees and their email addresses? I would like to invite them to the wiki but I must have thrown my list away.
Thanks,
I don't know where my list is either. Maybe someone at the college still has it.
